Superintendent's Message
Dear Grass Lake Community Schools Families, Staff, and Community Members,
As we close another successful school year, I want to sincerely thank you for the incredible support, collaboration, and trust you have shown over the past two years. It is truly an honor to serve the Grass Lake community.
Our 2025–2026 theme, “Rooted and Rising,” perfectly captures who we are and where we are headed. We are grounded in strong traditions, meaningful relationships, and community pride and we are rising together toward even greater opportunities for our students. Together, we have accomplished so much during the 25-26 school year:
Student Achievement: We continue to see academic growth across multiple grade levels, a testament to the hard work of our students and the dedication of our teachers and support staff. Looking ahead, we are expanding Science and Physical Education offerings at the high school, continuing the double literacy block for 6th and 7th graders, and launching our new K–5 reading and writing curriculum, Collaborative Literacy, at George Long Elementary.
Facility Improvements: With the strong support of our community in passing the May 2026 bond, we have begun important infrastructure improvements that will positively impact our students and families for years to come. I will be communicating progress on projects on our website, via social media and through community updates.
Community Engagement: We strengthened partnerships with local organizations and businesses, creating more opportunities for families and community members to engage in the life of our schools. Thank you to our business and district partners for standing alongside us as true champions for students. I am incredibly proud of the Community Resource Closet started at George Long to assist our families in need.
Staff Support and Development: This year, we focused on strengthening instructional practices with an emphasis on student engagement. In 2026–2027, we will deepen that work through curriculum alignment, implementation fidelity, and enhanced assessment practices to ensure continuous improvement aligned to our district goals.
Strategic Planning: We have completed nearly all action steps within our 2022–2027 Strategic Plan. Upcoming priorities include enhanced HR practices, a new PBIS model at George Long, expanded staff leadership opportunities through Schedule B and department/grade-level chair roles, and continued facility and transportation improvements.
Student Opportunities: Our students continue to benefit from expanded learning opportunities designed to help them thrive. The Future Forward program at the high school supports every Warrior in pursuing a personalized path to success. Partnerships with Adrian College, Albion College, Spring Arbor University, Olivet College and a soon to be announced partnership with Eastern Michigan University have strengthened post-secondary opportunities for our graduates. Congratulations to our students who shined this year on the fields, courts and on the stage! A special congratulations to our Robotics program for representing the GLCS at the World Championships last month- you are the founding fathers of a growing program.
These successes are possible because of our collective Warrior efforts. Our students, families, staff, Board of Education, and community partners each play a vital role in making Grass Lake Community Schools a place of excellence.
As we look ahead to 2026–2027, I remain deeply committed to ensuring every Grass Lake student has access to a high-quality, engaging educational experience. I am excited about what lies ahead and grateful to continue this journey alongside you. I am proud to be a Warrior.

Grass Lake Community Schools Family,
On behalf of our Board of Education, staff, and students, I want to extend my gratitude to the entire Grass Lake community for your support of the May 5th bond proposal.
This investment represents more than just facilities, it reflects a communal commitment to the future of our students and our community. Because of your support, we will be able to move forward with important district-wide improvements focused on enhancing safety and security, modernizing learning environments, upgrading technology, and expanding opportunities for our students at every level. The bond planning process has been almost two years in the making and today we can start moving forward together.
We are especially grateful that this bond was approved with a zero mill increase, demonstrating both your trust in our vision and your continued commitment to responsible stewardship of community resources. This work has been shaped by the voices of our community through feedback, conversations, and years of engagement and we are proud to carry that partnership forward as these projects begin to take shape. Our district website will host updates on the Bond project process, timeline and relevant pictures and artifacts moving forward. We will also make sure to keep our vibrant social media presence for those who like their information this way.
Thank you for believing in our students, supporting our staff, and investing in the future of Grass Lake Community Schools.
Together, we are building something truly special.

GLCS Family,
As part of School Board Appreciation Month, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank our Grass Lake Community Schools Board of Education for their continued commitment to our students, staff, and community.
Serving on a school board is no small task. Our Board members dedicate countless hours to thoughtful decision making that shapes the educational experiences of our students, supports our educators and staff, and upholds the values and vision of our district. Their leadership, compassion, and focus on what is best for students reflect a genuine commitment to public education.
We recognize the sacrifices involved in this volunteer role: late nights, difficult conversations, and balancing personal and professional responsibilities. Their willingness to serve speaks to a deep sense of service over self, and that commitment does not go unnoticed.
As Superintendent, I am grateful for the forward-thinking leadership and steady guidance our Board provides. Their work has a meaningful and lasting impact on our schools and on the families we serve.
Please join me in thanking our Board of Education for their dedication to Grass Lake Community Schools.

Grass Lake Community Schools Family,
As we approach the colder months, we want to remind you of our procedures for notifying families about inclement weather that may impact school operations, including closures, delays, or early dismissals.
The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. In the event of inclement weather, our team carefully monitors weather conditions and works closely with local authorities to make decisions about school schedules.
Notification Process
If changes to the school schedule are necessary, we will inform families as soon as possible using the following methods:
- Automated Calls — Families will receive a phone call from the school district. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date in our records.
- Email Communication — An email will be sent to all parents and guardians with detailed information.
- Website — Updates will be posted on the school website
- Social Media — Follow us on Facebook and X/Twitter for the latest updates.
- Local Media — We will notify local TV and radio stations to broadcast school closure or delay information. FYI- the channels are not always updated in real time so I would not depend on these avenues for your information.
Key Considerations
- Timing of Decisions: Decisions regarding closures or delays will typically be made by 5:30am to allow families time to plan. When information is available the night before, we will take this into consideration and communicate accordingly.
- After-School Activities: Updates about extracurricular activities and events will be shared separately if needed. No Elementary or Middle School events will take place on an inclement weather day. High School athletics/events status will be announced later that day with a goal of communicating by noon.
- Emergency Dismissals: If weather conditions worsen during the school day, we may need to dismiss students early. Please ensure your child knows their emergency dismissal plan.
We encourage all families to review their own plans for childcare, transportation, and other arrangements in the event of weather-related schedule changes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.
With Warrior Pride,
Dr. Nicholas Angel- Superintendent
