As is occurring across the nation in schools and in the work place, gender identity equality discussions have become a growing topic for school families and administrators. Protecting the rights of all individuals in our schools is of paramount concern to all of us.

Students who are identifying themselves as transgender are protected based on a ruling by the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati  to occupy gender-separated facilities in public school buildings according to their personal gender identity. Recently the same court upheld a ruling that discrimination based on gender identity, or non-conformity, is prohibited. While this ruling is being reviewed by the United States Supreme Court, schools are required to treat each student as they are gender-identifying themselves, while we refer to them by their identifying pronouns and proper names, allowing them to wear clothing that corresponds to their gender identity, and allowing them to use restroom facilities and other gender-separated areas, regardless of their assigned sex at birth.
Grass Lake Community Schools is committed to providing a safe, educational environment for all of our students to the extent that the laws allow us, while at the same time protecting the privacy of our students.

A notification for parents of students who will be new to GLCS in the fall of 2017
Grass Lake Community Schools provides computing devices for each of our students for the entire school year for our Kindergarten through 12th Grade students. We call this program our "1:1 Computer Initiative". A requirement of this program is that a parent of each new student must attend one mandatory informational meeting with school administrators before the devices are given to each new student.

Two such informational meetings have been scheduled for this fall; both being held in the Grass Lake High School Auditorium. The first meeting will be Wednesday, August 16, at 10:00 AM, while a second meeting will be Monday, August 21, at 7:15 PM, immediately following our Back to School Night. (Back to School Night is scheduled for 5:00 PM-7:00 PM on Monday, August 21). Parents of new students are only required to attend one of these meetings. It is not required that students attend these informational meetings.
