Mr. Brad Hamilton

We're glad you have stopped to see our school district's website. Our district enrolls over 1,250 students in our
pre-school through 12th grade system in three buildings. We are continually working to improve our students' academic achievement by increasing rigor, while promoting relevance and relationships with our students. We are located in the Township of Grass Lake, in Jackson County in the south-central area of Michigan just south of Interstate 94, approximately 50 miles west of Detroit and 10 miles east of Jackson.

Along with our main web page, which you are currently viewing, our website has four other start pages that can be found u
nder "Schools" in the navigation bar below our header. Continuing across that bar you will find general information about our school district and our community. You will will also find navigation bars on the left side of each page containing information that is more specific to each of our buildings. It is our intention to make this page as easily accessible as possible. We invite comments toward improving our web presence, which can be sent to Click here for directions to our Central Office.

Grass Lake Schools Continues Their Academic Improvement -
Congratulations to our students and staff as they continue to improve their subject proficiency levels in the Michigan Merit Exam taken by all 11th graders. In the most recent Michigan Merit Exam State testing completed March 5, 6 and 7, 2013, Grass Lake High School students ranked among the top of all Jackson County students in all subjects in proficiency levels as prescribed by the Michigan Department of Education. Out of the 13 Jackson County high schools, Grass Lake ranked #1 in mathematics, #1 in social studies, #2 in writing, #3 in science, and #4 in reading.

The Michigan Merit Examination (MME) assesses students in grade 11 and eligible students in grade 12 based on Michigan high school standards. It is administered each March, and consists of three components:
- ACT Plus Writing® college entrance examination
- WorkKeys® job skills assessments in reading, mathematics, and "locating information"
- Michigan-developed assessments in mathematics, science, and social studies

George Long Elementary Participates in "Energizing Education - Jackson"
Initiated by a challenge match grant from Consumers Energy in 2012, Energizing Education was created to ensure all students achieve grade-level milestones in Jackson County through a three-pronged approach to literacy development. Volunteer tutors, supervised and guided by a literacy specialist, work with students (K-2) individually in reading, writing, and word work during school hours, working towards improved skills and a more positive attitude about reading. The Energizing Education initiative also supports after-school programs through training, consultation, and material support for staff and volunteers. Finally, family outreach activities held by Energizing Education encourage parents to take a more active role in supporting their children’s education, providing skills and materials they can use to encourage literacy in the home. A pilot of the program at Frost Elementary School ran from January-May 2013, and we are now in the process of implementing this program at George Long Elementary School.
