Students who are identifying themselves as transgender are protected based on a ruling by the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to occupy gender-separated facilities in public school buildings according to their personal gender identity. Recently the same court upheld a ruling that discrimination based on gender identity, or non-conformity, is prohibited. While this ruling is being reviewed by the United States Supreme Court, schools are required to treat each student as they are gender-identifying themselves, while we refer to them by their identifying pronouns and proper names, allowing them to wear clothing that corresponds to their gender identity, and allowing them to use restroom facilities and other gender-separated areas, regardless of their assigned sex at birth.
By going to http://bit.ly/2wMFJno you will find the Grass Lake Technology Handbook that contains the necessary forms. On page 17 is the Parent/Student Responsible Use Signature Page and on Page 18/19 is the Electronic Device Insurance Protection Plan. Please submit these forms and insurance payment to any school office beginning at Back to School night so your student can promptly receive their devices on a day that will be announced by the individual schools. If you do not have the means to print these forms outside of school, the forms are now available in the school offices to complete and turn in on Back to School Night, which is on Monday, August 21, from 5-7 PM in all buildings.
A reminder to our Grass Lake Community Schools families reminding everyone that our Back to School night for all three buildings is Monday, August 21, from 5-7 PM, and our first day of school is Wednesday, August 23, which will be a full day. Also, for our busing families..... any changes, updates, or clarifications for bus transportation need to be submitted by phone by 5:00 PM Thursday, August 17, to be enacted for the first day of school. Please contact the transportation office at 517-867-5544 as soon as possible.
The Mission of Grass Lake Community Schools is to provide a quality learning environment that will empower all students to meet their individual needs, discover their potential, and gain essential skills that will enable them to become responsible contributing citizens of our world.
This is an excellent opportunity to make a tax-deductible contribution that, after expenses, provides funding that directly supports our students. None of the proceeds go toward compensation for individuals as all GLEF Board members volunteer their time for the event and they pay full price admission to the event.
